An eight-day regulator clock by Grignion and Son, Covent Garden, London, dated 1782, with mahogany pedestal case with urn surmount, on tapered plinth and base to the floor, single-train movement with jewelled dead beat escapement and giltwood rod pendulum.
Full description
An English 8 day regulator by Grignon and Son, Covent Garden, dated 1782. Engraved on backplate ‘Grignon & Son London AD 1782’. Jewelled deadbeat escapement. Maintaining power. Giltwood pendulum rod. 3lb brass weight. Gut line, 0.6mm diameter. Screwed to the wall and stable. Movement screwed to case via backcock. Wound with size 8 key and there are separate case keys for the hood and the trunk. Repair marks on dial plate ‘Matthews Bishops Castle January 15/69’. ‘Aug 14 1847’. ‘J Matthews January 14 1856’. On front plate several dates for ‘R&Co’ ‘12/8/31, 8/8/39, 24/11/52, 30/12/59, 5/9/70’ & on rear of front plate, hidden beneath the Gt wheel ‘Wm MARTIN Dec 6th 1899. ‘1783’ crudely written on backboard.
Provenance
Brought to Powis Castle from Walcot Hall in 1930. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
