Pastel on paper, embroidered with wool and silk on a mirror ground, Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive of Plassey 'Clive of India', KB, FRS, DCL, MP (1725-1774) after Thomas Gainsborough RA (Sudbury 1727 - London 1788). Oval. A portrait based on Gainsborough's lost portrait which was engraved by John McArdell. See 'Treasures from India' Catalogue p135.

Purchased by the National Trust with funding from The National Heritage Memorial Fund from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in August 1999.
