Summary
Two portraits of Robert, Lord Clive. The first - a pastel portrait of Robert Clive, Lord Clive of Plassey (1762), KB (1764). Embroidered with wool and silk on a mirror ground. A portrait based on Gainsborough's lost portrait which was engraved by John McArdell (see 'Treasures from India' catalogue p135). Also listed as PET.POW.MISC.32 (1988 valuation). In an elaborately moulded giltwood frame with applied decoration. The second - painting on glass of Robert Clive, Baron Clive of Plassey 'Clive of India' (1725 - 1774) after Thomas Gainsborough RA (Sudbury 1727 - London 1788). A portrait based on Gainsborough's lost portrait which was engraved by John McArdell (see 'Treasures from India' catalogue p135), painted on a mirror ground. Also listed as PET.POW.MISC.33 (1988 valuation).
