Summary
Box - One of four rectangular boxes from a twelve-piece gaming set. Wood covered in black lacquer and decorated with an overall zig-zag pattern of floral bands in gold and red lacquer, partly in relief; the centre of the box decorated with a baron's coronet; the sides with sprigs of flowers in gold. Chinese, c.1750-70.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). Included in 1774 inventory as 'A [black and gold Japan] Dressing box with nests of boxes'. Purchased by the National Trust with funding from The National Heritage Memorial Fund from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in August 1999.
