Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Carriage with Six Outriders and Sportsmen on a Country Road, Anglo-Netherlandish School, late 17th century. A landscape with tall trees at left and right, a view across fields and hills in the centre; small figures in the mid- and foreground include a carriage drawn by four white horses; six outriders, one of whom leads a riderless horse; five men on foot, carrying guns; a number of hounds.
Provenance
Probably painted for a fixed position in the Castle, from which later displaced; formerly in the family apartments (East Wing); by descent, until bought by the National Trust at Christie’s sale of contents of Chirk Castle (held at castle) 21 June 2004, lot 38, the catalogue of which states that: “This painting may well have been acquired on the Grand Tour by Sir Thomas Myddleton IV, 2nd Bt (d.1684), who is known to have travelled through France and Italy in 1671.”
