Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Jacob's Dream, after Salvator Rosa (Arenella, Naples 1615 – Rome 1673). Jacob had a dream of 'the angels of God ascending and descending' a letter stretching from heaven to earth at Bethel, on his way to find a wife. It signified the land of Canaan would belong to him and his descendants. No English collection in the 18th century would have been regarded as complete without a painting by Salvator Rosa, the recent acquisition of this one to occupy the overmantel is a small compensation for a particularly fine allegorical composition that was formerly in the Rendlesham Collection. This is a good and seemingly early copy of a picture at Chatsworth.
