Summary
Oil painting on canvas, River Landscape with a Tower and Houses on a Hill on the far side, and a Herdsman with Cattle and goats conversing with a Woman on a Horse on a Road in the foreground by Abraham Begeyn (Leyden 1637 or 1638 - Berlin 1697), 1675/77. Landscape with figures, a woman mounted on a horse, a man at the horse's head, and sundry farm animals including cattle and dogs. In the centre, left a vernacular Italian farmstead with circular tower and outbuildings. A stream with a distant horizon with cloudy sky on the right.
Provenance
In 1677 as '3 Pictures' in Inventory in ‘My Lord Huntingtours Chamber'; in 1679, 1683 inventories and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
