Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Frances Thynne, Lady Worsley (1673-1750) by Charles Jervas (Dublin 1675 – London 1739), inscribed bottom left: The honble / Frances Lady Worsley / Sr. G. Kneller pinxit, circa 1700/10. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, turned slightly to the left, head inclined slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator. She wears a white satin dress with a long velvet cloak of deep blue, she stands in a classical setting. The Hon. Frances Thynne, Lady Worsley (1673-1750) was the daughter of Thomas, Viscount Weymouth. Born on 31 October 1673 in Staffordshire. Married, in 1690, Sir Robert Worsley, 4th Bt. Mother of Frances Worsley, Viscountess Carteret and grandmother of Grace Carteret, Countess of Dysart (1713-55). Mother of Frances Worsley, Baroness Carteret and grandmother of Grace Carteret, 4th Countess of Dysart.
Provenance
In around 1820 catalogue and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
