Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Gardens at Pratolino by Hendrick Danckerts (The Hague 1625 - Amsterdam 1680), signed : HD 1673. The Gardens at Pratolino, on the left is Giambologna's Appennino sculpture and a female statue on a plinth centre right, with vernacular building beyond; a group of two women and one child is centre left. The artist worked for Charles II and had spent several years in Italy. There are several of his paintings at Hampton Court.
Provenance
In 1677 inventory (the joiner's bill dated 24 December 1674 includes the item 'ffor takeing out 6 pannills & putting in 6 picters...one In My Lords dressing Roome') and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
