Caption
Edward Roper is referred to in the 1845 Handbook as a ‘friend of the family’. He was master of the Charlton (afterwards the Goodwood) Hunt, of which the 2nd Duke of Devonshire was a leading member. He died in the hunting field at the age of 84. He is described in Lady Louisa Cavendish’s Catalogue, of 1860, as tutor to Lord Burlington's daughters. There are portraits of him by Mercier at Nostell Priory (National Trust) and by Sir Godfrey Kneller at Cowdray.

Oil painting on canvas, Edward Roper (1631-1715), possibly by Jonathan Richardson the elder (London 1665 – London 1745). A three-quarter-length portrait, turned to the left, head facing, gazing at spectator, wearing a buff coat and holding a riding switch in his right hand; on the left is a dog.
Provenance
In Swift 1811 inventory and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
