Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Pastoral Landscape, by Jan Frans van Bloemen, called Orizzonte (Antwerp 1662 – Rome 1749) . Landscape with figures in the foreground and distant buildings This painting and its pair were bought by the picture dealer William Kent for Sir Nathaniel Curzon in Florence, from the Marchese Arnaldi in 1758. A pair to KED/P/219 and is listed as being in this position in the first catalogue of the collection at Kedleston, printed in 1769, and could possibly have served as overdoors in the old house. Orizzonte was one of the most successful of the Flemish artists who went to Rome and specialised in painting landscapes, particularly for foreign tourists, in the vein made popular by Gaspard Dughet. His nickname even appears to have derived from his speciality, referring to the beautiful prospects, or 'horizons' in his pictures.
Provenance
This and another Orizzonte (KED/P/220) were bought in Florence by the picture-dealer William Kent (not the architect of that name) from the Marchese Arnaldi in 1758 for Sir Nathaniel Curzon, 5th Bt, 1st Baron Scarsdale (1726-1804) and thence by descent; bought with part of the contents of Kedleston Hall with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) in 1986 when the house and park were given to the National Trust by Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000)
