Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Cows crossing a Bridge near a Town by Giovanni Battista Cimaroli (Salò 1687 - Venice 1771). Landscape painting depicting an Italianate landscape with cows crossing a bridge on the outskirts of a town. A pendant to NT 108839 (KED/P/143). Cimaroli was for many English collectors in the 18th century a terra firma equivalent of Canaletto, and was chiefly prized for the decorative effect of his landscapes
Provenance
Probably acquired in a sale at Langford's in 1761; recorded in Principal Dressing Room by 1770; and thence by descent until gifted to the National Trust in 1986 by Francis Curzon, 3rd Viscount Scarsdale (1924-2000).
