Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Diogenes with his Lantern by Gioacchino Assereto (Genoa 1600 - Genoa 1649). The picture depicts Diogenes with his lantern semi-clad, staff in his right hand, five figures to his right. The Cynic philosopher Diogenes, who lived in Athens during 4th century BC is reputed to have gone out with a lighted lantern in broad daylight. When asked why, he explained that he was looking for an honest man, but the search was just as futile. Formerly attributed to Luca Giordano, this picture is prominently situated over the chimneypiece at Kedleston Hall under the real Giordano in one of Stuart's watercolours of his proposed State Room.
