Caption
As with many of his pictures, this painting has been inscribed by the artist 'Animal painter to the Queen'. Whitford started life as an excise officer, but when found guilty of embezzlement, he took up animal portraiture. Queen Victoria owned some of his pictures in her collection at ShawFarm, Windsor.
