Caption
The artist, best known for his views of Britain’s landscape and churches has depicted a stormy wartime impression of Lacock Abbey. He visited the Abbey in March 1942, whilst he was surveying bomb damage in nearby Bath and commented on the sinister nature of the terracotta figures and the Abbey’s decrepitude. It was bequeathed by Alec Clifton-Taylor (1907 – 1985), the well-known architectural historian and TV presenter, through the Art Fund, and has hung at Lacock from 1987.
