Caption
Lady Margaret was the third daughter of Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford, and wife of George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland. The coats of arms of the two families are shown top left. This is one of various versions, one of which is in the National Portrait Gallery.
Summary
Oil painting on panel, Lady Margaret Russell, Countess of Cumberland (1560 - 1660), at the age of 25, English School, 17th century. Inscribed : AET 25 Ano 1585 (and later inscription with name of sitter). A head-and-shoulders portrait facing, wearing dress decorated with pearls, ruff and black cap (the composition has a bias towards the right and were it not for the similar portrait at Gorhambury could be assumed to have been cut). Arms of Bedford and Cumberland. Third daughter of Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford and wife of George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland.

Given by Matilda Theresa Talbot (formerly Gilchrist-Clark) (1871 – 1958), who gave the Abbey, the village of Lacock and the rest of the estate to the National Trust in 1944, along with 96 of the family portraits and other pictures, in 1948
