Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Cumaean Sibyl, attributed to Bartolomeo Gennari (1594-1661). A half-length depiction of the Cumaean Sibyl in a turban, a letter in her right hand, wearing a red dress with full sleeves and a gold drape. The paper held in her right hand is inscribed: GLORIA AETERNA / SACRA VIRGO / SIBYLLA CUMAEA
Provenance
Possibly the ‘Sibyl' acquired by Charles Winn from S. Jennings in September 1823 for £35, as an original by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino, although Brockwell, 1915 relates this provenance to cat. 271; purchased by the National Trust by private treaty sale from Lord St Oswald in 2010
