Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Parr,‘Old Parr’ (1493?-1635) manner of Jacques Dumont (1701-1781), 18th century. A half-length portrait of an old man with a grey beard, known as Old Parr, the Veteran, standing with both hands on his stick dressed simply in brown with a flat hat. Thomas Parr (c.1483-c.1635) was famous for having lived to the incredible age of 152. He was presented to King Charles I by Lord Arundel in his 152nd year and later buried in Westminster Abbey.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Charles Winn in the 19th century, as a `character' or curiosity painting; purchased by the National Trust by private treaty sale from Lord St Oswald in 2010.
