Full description
This portrait has long been identified as showing the father of Susannah Henshaw (c.1710-1742) , the wife of Sir Rowland Winn, 4th baronet of Nostell. There is a longstanding confusion as to his name, with the back of the painting and most secondary sources naming him Edward Henshaw (or occasionally Edward Charles). However, all primary sources name him as Charles Henshaw (son of Charles Henshaw, 1630-1665), including name plates from the family crypt at St Dunstan's church nr Canterbury, Kent and books in the Nostell library e.g. NT 3089956. Edward was the name of his son who predeceased him, probably named after his father-in-law Edward Roper (1614-1717). The confusion may stem from the St Dunstan burial record which records "Edward Henshaw, squire" as the father of the teenage Edward Henshaw (1707-1720). This is almost certainly a clerical error.
