Summary
One of two red-stained pine, square, tapering head posts, each with metal top spike, additional fillet for retaining a headboard (not present), single bolt holes for receiving end/side rails with one bolt at each end, many tack marks and with a metal castor (missing from [a.i]). Marks made by the side rails suggest that the rails would have had a canvas mattress support tacked to a rebated edge on each rail, as opposed to inserts for slats; part of the head end of a four-poster bedstead with ‘No. 6’ handwritten on each part in pencil.
Provenance
Stamford collection; devised to the National Trust by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896-1976).
Marks and inscriptions
No. 6 (handwritten in pencil at least once)
