Caption

Lady Dorothy Grey was the youngest daughter of Harry Grey, 3rd Earl of Stamford (1685-1739) and Dorothy Wrighte (d.1738), daughter of Nathan Wrighte (1654-1721), Lord Keeper of the Great Seal.

Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Lady Dorothy Grey (d.1781), British (English) School, inscribed in 18th century script with name of sitter, bottom left: Lady Dorothy Grey / Eldest Daughter to / Harry Earl of Stamford, circa 1750. A painted oval half-length portrait of a mature woman, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a blue dress tied with a blue bow at the bosom, a long, waist-length white lace collar and a white lace bonnet tied with a blue bow under her chin, Youngest daughter of the 3rd Earl of Stamford.

Provenance

Sitter was sister to Harry Grey, 4th Earl of Stamford (1715 - 1778) and painting originally at Aldenham Park, the home of Lord Acton; bought at Christie's in 1929; by Mrs Cecily Grey (d. 1961)(cousin and godmother of Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford); by whom purchased, after her death in 1961; bequeathed to the National Trust with the house, estate and all the contents of Dunham Massey by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford (1896 - 1976)

Marks and inscriptions

Verso: 'This portrait of Lady Dorothy Grey sister to Harry 4th e.of S. was originally at Aldenham Park, the Home of Lord Acton and was bought at Christies in 1929 by my cousin and godmother Mrs Cecily Grey. After her death in 1961 it was purchased by me. '(note by Lord Stamford on the reverse)
