Caption
This view of Venice shows the entrance to the Canareggio towards the right of the picture, with the Campanile (bell tower) of San Geremia and Palazzo Labia on one side, and on the other - at the right of the composition - the Palazzo Querini detti Papozze. The Grand Canal is shown to the left, and in the foreground a ‘traghetto’ – a ferry service that carries passengers over the various canals. This picture must have been painted before 1742, because it does not include Marchiori’s statue of St. John Nepomuk on the ‘traghetto’ of S. Geremia, which was erected in that year. This sort of view, popularised by artists such as Canaletto, was often produced for Grand Tourists who wanted visual mementoes of their travels abroad.
