Caption
Endymion Porter was the son of Giles Porter of Aston-sub-Edge, Gloucestershire. He was brought up in Spain, where his father was an interpreter attached to the English Mission of 1605. He was introduced at Court by the Duke of Buckingham, and later married his niece, Olivia Boteler. They had twelve children, only seven of whom survived past infancy. By his court employments and trading enterprises in the East Indies, he acquired a large fortune, which he used very liberally in the patronage of poets and artists. According to Herrick, he was one ‘who dost give / Not only subject matter for our wit / But also oil of maintenance to it.’
