Caption
Anne Hyde was the wife of the Duke of York, but died before he became King James II. She was the mother of two Queens: Mary, wife of William III; and Queen Anne. She was said to be ‘of great wit and excellent parts, and exercised a considerable influence over her husband.’
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Anne Hyde, Duchess of York (1637 – 1671), studio of Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680). A three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, seated to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing an off-the-shoulder amber-coloured dress and green cloak which is draped over her right shoulder and across her lap, her head supported by her right hand. Dark brown hair, with curls framing her brow Stone fluted column on the left with a reddish-brown drape Anne died before her husband became James II but she was the mother of two Queens, Mary, wife of William III, and Queen Anne.
