Caption
Philip Mainwaring was the son of Sir Randle Mainwaring of Over Peover in Cheshire. He was Secretary of State to Thomas Wentworth (1593-1641) following the latter’s appointment as Lord Deputy General of Ireland. This is a later copy of the double portrait formerly at Wentworth Woodhouse. Van Dyck’s composition was based on Titian’s double portrait of ‘Georges d’Armagnac, Bishop of Rodez, with his Secretary Guillaume Philandrier’, now at Alnwick Castle.

Two three-quarter-length portraits, Strafford on the left, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, holding a paper in his left hand, dressed in black with a white linen collar, and Mainwaring on the right, leaning over a table, turned to the right, head glancing up at Strafford, writing, dressed in deep scarlet.
