Caption
Henrietta Cavendish-Bentinck (1737-1827) was the daughter of the 2nd Duke of Portland, who, in 1763, married the 5th Earl of Stamford. She bore him no fewer than ten children. Sittings for this, and the companion portrait of her husband, are recorded in 1790. The pictures were dispatched to Dunham Massey a year later, in September 1791.

Oil painting on canvas, Lady Henrietta Cavendish-Bentinck, Countess of Stamford (1737-1827) by George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness 1734 – Kendal 1802). 1791 Three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, seated in a chair, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a black/grey dress, white fichu and white headdress over powdered hair. She is holding a book in her left hand on her lap, her right hand holds a fold of her dress. The base of a large pillar to the right, scarlet drape to the left. . One of a pair with DUN/P/23. Within a gilt frame.
