Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Naval Action (possibly The British Landing at Kip's Bay, New York Island, 15 September 1776), by Dominic Serres the elder, RA (Auch 1722 - London 1793), signed and dated 1779. Previously thought to depict 'The landing at Savannah' (Alan Russett, 'Dominic Serres', (2001), p.114, plate 47), or Action at Tarrytown, 4 August 1776 (the origin of this suggestion is unknown). Re-identified in 2013 as possibly Kip's Bay, by Frank Licameli, researcher at West Point, New York. Licamelli relates the painting to a watercolour drawing in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, London (Object ID PAH9491), re-identified as Kip's Bay in 2008 by Don Hagist of Rhode Island.
