Summary
Oil painting on panel, Called Mary Clopton, Lady Cordell (d.1584) but really Sarah Bankworth, Lady Cordell (d. 1646), British (English) School), circa 1620-1630. A three-quarter- length portrait in a black silk brocade dress with lace ruffle, cuffs and cap. A pearl bracelet on each wrist, a book in her left hand and her right hand resting on a chair. Inscribed 'Mary, wife of the said Sir William, daughter and sole heir of Richard Clopton Esquire, third son of Sir William Clopton by Margaret his wife, third daughter and one of the heirs of Richard Bozom Knight' but has recently been identified as Sarah Bankworth (d. 1646), wife of John Cordell (1582 - 1649).
