Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir John Dyke Acland, 4th/8th Baronet Acland of Columb-John (1778-1785), manner of George Knapton (London 1698 – Kensington 1778). A half-length portrait of Sir John as a boy, aged 7, dressed in a masquerade costume, in blue silk cost with lace collar and cuffs, gold ribbon edging on front and sleeve and pale pink bow on right arm and brown cape. Family coat Arms on the left – black and white chequered background with red horizontal bar across centre and crest of man’s hand lying to the left with a falcon on the hand (chequy argent and sable, a fesse gules). Sir John was only baronet from February 1785 until his death in April 1785. He was buried in Broadclyst on 23rd April 1785 and succeeded by his uncle, Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 9th Bt (1752–1794).
Provenance
Accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury and transferred to the National Trust following the death of Richard Acland (1906 - 1990) in 1995
