Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Hugh Acland, 1st/5th Baronet of Columb-John MP (1639-1714) by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), sigend lower left PL (in monogram) and inscribed by a later hand: Sir Hugh Acland Bt /1672. Portrait of a young man, three-quarter length, standing, turned to the left, gazing at spectator, his right hand on a stone plinth, his left hand by his side holds the gilt hilt of his sword. He has on a full-bottomed brown wig, and is wearing a brown silk cloak covering his clothes but revealing long full white sleeves, and a large lace cravat. In the background on the left is a fluted pillar on a tall plinth. Fourth son of Sir John Acland 1st Bt (c.1591-1647) and Elizabeth Vincent. He married in 1673/4 Anne Daniel (d.1728), daughter of Sir Thomas Daniel a wealthy Yorkshire knight.
