Summary

Oil painting on panel, Sir Arthur Acland Kt (d.1610), British (English) School, inscribed bottom left (later, in house style), Sr. Arthur Acland Kt./1600. Son of Hugh Acland (d.1622) and Margaret Monke. Portrait of a young man, three-quarter-length, three-quarter profile, turning to the left, gazing at spectator. His hair is short and brushed back and he wears a short 'Van Dyke' beard and moustache. He wears a ruff, and a black jerkin, and large a fur-lined cloak, dyed lilac. The cloak rests on his left shoulder and is wrapped around his waist, he left hand protruding through it. His right hand is placed on a green-cloth-covered table on the left, on which his hat rests. He married Elinor Mallet (d.1606) who on his death married Francis Vincent 1st Bt (c.1568-1640). Sir Arthur's son was Sir John Acland 1st Bt (c.1591-1647) who married Elizabeth Vincent the daughter of his step-father's first marriage to Sarah Paulet (d.1608).

Provenance

Accepted in lieu by HM Government and transferred to the National Trust in 1995, as by circle of Marcus Gheeraerts the younger.
