Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Hugh Acland, 1st/5th Baronet of Columb-John MP (1639-1714), English School, 1690. Previously attributed to William Gandy (c.1660-1729), inscribed mid-left (later, in house style): Sir Hugh Acland Bart./1690. A three-quarter length portrait of Sir Hugh Acland, 5th Bt, in a painted stone oval as a mature man dressed in black armour. He is turning towards the left gazing at the spectator. He wears a full-bottomed heavily-curled light brown wig, and has a large white lace cravat. Son of Sir John Acland 1st Bt (c.1591-1647) and Elizabeth Vincent (d. by 1650). He married Anne Daniel (d.1728) the daughter of Sir Thomas Daniel, a wealthy Yorkshire knight who brought him a considerable dowry. He rebuilt Killerton House in 1680.
