Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Hugh Acland, 6th Bt (1696/7 - 1728), English School circa 1700. A portrait of a young man, three-quarter-length, turned slightly to the right, facing and gazing at the spectator. He wears a powdered grey curled wig its ends twisted and knotted and a blue velvet coat with silver frogging, a red cloak is draped over his left shoulder and across the front and held at the waist with his left hand, his right hand rests on a pedestal. He also wears a slim gilt sword belt, and a sword hilt is seen on his left hip. Behind and to the let is a red drape pulled back to reveal a distant view with cloudy sky to the right. Arms of Acland and Wrothe[s]? bottom left (added later).
Provenance
Presumably at Barn Elms until the son (who married Maria Acland) or the grandson of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt, by his second marriage to Frances Ann Acland, the 3rd and 4th Bts, who successively inherited Barn Elms and Stourhead after Sir Richard Colt Hoare's death, sold Barn Elms; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946; on loan from Stourhead to Killerton since 1997
