Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Battle Scene and Siege: Turks and Poles Fighting, possibly Austrian School, circa 1700, bears a signature and date: Lucas Krannache Fecit et Execudet. AD 1597 in gold writing on a red banner. In 1683 the Ottoman army was rounted by a largely Polish force commanded by King John Sobieski III. The red and white national colours and the eagle of Poland can be seen on the banners. [ Turks v. Pole outside the walls of Vienna in 1532.]
Provenance
This item forms part of the original Drewe family collection at Castle Drogo. It was purchased by the National Trust by private treaty with the help of a grant from the Art Fund and the Purchase Grant Fund, 1986. It was originally bought by Julius Drew(e) for Kilmorie.
