In the background, a bearded scholar sits, with his hands crossed, asleep, in a dark room by an arched window on the left. A maid stokes a fire in the foreground on the right. In the middle a spiral staircase twists up anti-clockwise. It is a copy after a painting by Rembrandt in the Louvre.
