Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Plymouth, Mount Edgcumbe, and Plymouth Sound, seen from Saltram by William Tomkins (London c.1730 – London 1792), circa 1770. The River Plym and Saltram Wood. Looking downstream, with Saltram Wood and the Amphitheatre on the left. The house and gardens lie behind. Mount Edgcumbe is the wooded height in the background; Cattedown is in the middle distance. The picture is painted from a point further south than [SAL.P.167]

Commissioned by John Parker (1743/5 – 1788), Lord Boringdon and thence by descent; accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death-duties from the executors of Edmund Robert Parker, 4th Earl of Morley (1877-1951) and transferred to the National Trust in 1957
