Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Saint John in the Wilderness (after Raphael), 18th century. The original painting in the Uffizi, Florence was painted for Cardinal Pompeo Colonna in 1517. A young St John the Baptist sits on the rocky outcrop of a grotto-like cliff formation that forms the dark background for his brightly lit naked figure. Part of his body is draped in a leopard skin. His raises his right hand points to a wooden cross that radiates light. Next to it, on the left is a spring. In his right hand he holds a scroll on which are the letters A [GNUS] DEI ('Behod the Lamb of God'). On the right is a sunny landscape beyond with waterfalls.
