Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Theresa Robinson, Mrs Parker (1744-1775), and her Son, John Parker, later 1st Earl of Morley (1772-1840) by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), 1773. A three-quarter-length portrait of the daughter of 1st Lord Grantham. and second wife of John Parker, later 1st Lord Boringdon who died soon after the birth of her daughter, Theresa. She is seated to left, wearing white dress and white neckerchief, bordered with blue, her right arm resting on the chair, her hand supporting her chin, her left hand on her leg. Her small son dressed in white stands at her knee on the left.
Provenance
Sittings took place between 1772-1773 (though Theresa was also sitting for the full length portrait at the same time) and then on until 1775. Payment was made for the completed work in July 1775. Accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death-duties from the executors of Edmund Robert Parker, 4th Earl of Morley (1877-1951) and transferred to the National Trust in 1957
