Summary
A giltwood side or pier table, English, circa 1775, one of a pair, the top made of Italian and French specimen marbles. Traces of earlier gilt and paint beneath the current gilt surface. The top's central scene a landscape of trees and a cow drinking at a pool of water, within radiating bands of specimen marbles. The base of serpentine form, the friezes carved with a central wreath issuing husk chains terminating at each end in an eight-petalled flower in a circular reserve at the top of the leg block, and with a bead moulding below. The rectangular-section tapering legs with sunken reserves filled with pendant chains of husks and terminating in moulded block feet.
Full description
The tops of these tables are closely related to the tops of another pair of side or pier tables [NT 871432.1 - .2] with painted bases at Saltram, and are so similar that they can probably be attributable to the same workshop. The specimen marble scenes to the latter pair are also oval, but landscape rather than portrait. The edge to the tops of this pair of tables are of moulded Giallo di Sienna marble; the edges of the tops of NT 871432.1 - .2 have a curved edge in yellow marble. Both are made from specimen marbles from Italy and France. (Megan Wheeler, 2017)
