Summary
A pair of giltwood side or pier tables, English, circa 1775, both topped with a specimen marble top centred by a specimen marble pastoral scene. Traces of earlier gilt and paint beneath the current gilt surface. The tops of these tables are closely related to the tops of another pair of side or pier tables [NT 871432.1 - .2] with painted bases at Saltram, and are so similar that they can probably be attributable to the same workshop. The specimen marble scenes to the latter pair are also oval, but landscape rather than portrait. The edge to the tops of this pair of tables are of moulded Giallo di Sienna marble; the edges of the tops of NT 871432.1 - .2 have a curved edge in yellow marble. Both pairs of tables are made with Italian and French marbles.
