Summary
Jar, porcelain, globular (guan 罐 type), made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China, Yongzheng period (1723–35) or Qianlong period (1736–95), second quarter 18th century, decorated in the Imari palette (’Chinese Imari’) in underglaze blue and overglaze red and gold, with peonies, the round flat lid similarly decorated.
Full description
As Chinese porcelain production was disrupted following the invasion of the Manchus in 1644, European merchants turned to Japanese porcelain producers at Arita, leading to the development of the ‘Imari’ style. By the late 17th century Chinese porcelain production had recovered and among the wares being made at Jingdezhen were imitations of Japanese Imari porcelain, for which there was by now a well-established taste in Europe.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust by Montagu Brownlow Parker, 5th Earl of Morley (1878-1962), 1957.
