Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Hervey (1619-1642), British (English) School, 18th century. A painted oval head-and-shoulders portrait of a man, turned alightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, very dark background. He has long, mid-brown curly hair, and wears a stiff white collar with string and tassle ties at centre. 'Whose death Mr. Cowley so well lamented'.
Provenance
By descent until the death of the 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
