Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Humphrey May (1573-1630), British (English) School. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing beside red-draped table, with red draped curtain, right background, and balustrade on left. He has short dark hair, moustaches and suggestion of a clipped beard. He wears a dark doublet and hose, with a deep white collar and cuffs with heavy lace embroidery. A sword hilt is visible on right side of picture. His right hand holds a large Key of Office on a turquoise-coloured ribbon. His left hand rests on a pair of gloves lying across a table corner. A soft hat with braid around the crown also lies on the table. 'Maternal Grandfather to John, Earl of Bristol'.

By descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
