Summary
Portrait miniature, enamel, Stephen Fox, 1st Earl of Ilchester (1704-1776) by Christian Friedrich Zincke (Dresden 1685 - Lambeth 1767). 1728. Oval. Half-length portrait of a young man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a red velvet coat, white neckcloth and cravat. Brown eyes, powdered hair in queue tied with large black bow, florid complexion. Plain drab background. Dated 1728. Inscribed on reverse behind glass 'Mr Stephen Fox 1728, made Ld Ilchester 1741. C.F. Zincke pinxit'. Close friend of John, Lord Hervey.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Probably given by the sitter to Lord Hervey.
