Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Catherine Aston, Mrs Henry Hervey-Aston (d.1798) by John Smart I (Norwich 1741 - London 1811). 1781. Oval. Half-length portrait of a young woman, head turned and gazing to the left, wearing a blue dress and white cloak. Brown eyes, long black hair over her right shoulder, pale complexion. Plain drab background. Signed and dated l.r. 'J. S. 178?' . Previously thought to be portrait of Harriet Hervey-Aston.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Francis Wellesley and his sale at Sotherby's, 2 July 1920. Later acquired for Ickworth.
