Summary
Portrait miniature, enamel, Lord John Hervey, 2nd Baron Hervey of Ickworth, PC, MP (1696-1743) by Christian Friedrich Zincke (Dresden 1685 - Lambeth 1767). 1723. Oval. Half-length portrait of a man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a blue velvet coat and white cravat. Dark grey eyes, powdered full-bottomed wig with foretop. Plain brown background. Inscribed on backing paper in ink under glass 'The Rt Hon'ble John Ld Hervey, Eldest son to John Earl of Bristol 1723. He was afterwards called to the House of Lords and made Ld Privy Seal'. Engraved on the gilt rim within a sumptuous wood frame 'C.F. Zincke'. In 1723 the sitter's step-brother, Carr Hervey died, and Jack Hervey assumed the courtesy title of Lord Hervey. This miniature was possibly painted to mark this occasion.
