Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Clock-Painting of La Roche-Guyon, with a Ferry on the River Seine', c. 1815, early 19th-century, French school. Blue-grey sky overcast with clouds of greenish-yellow. Group of feathery trees on left on bank of lake. In left foreground a carriage and pair approaching ferry. Gentleman in black morning dress welcoming party ashore. On far shore, monastery-type buildings at foot of rocky hills. Clock tower on right contains French chiming clock. Fortress on top of hill with tower flying a white pennant. This painting is similar to 'Le chateau de la Roche-Guyon' (c.1773–1775) in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, ascribed to Hubert Robert.
