Summary
Oil painting on canvas (oval), Joseph Addison (1672-1719), after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), circa 1717-19. An oval head-and-shoulders portrait of a man, turned slightly to the right, head to the left, gazing at the spectator, with a fair complexion and long pale curled wig. Dark green coat, white open necked shirt. Joseph Addison was a poet and a political writer. He was a member of Parliament and Secretary of State for a short while under George I.

By descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
