Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lord Carr Hervey (1691-1723) as a Youth, British (English) School, circa 1700. A three-quarter-length portrait of a youth, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, seated, shoulder length brown hair, wearing a blue cloak with red lining, a pair of dividers in his left hand, his right resting on a globe, his left arm resting on a plinth adorned with a relief of putti. 'Carr, Lord Hervey' is inscribed in gold.
Provenance
Presumably commissioned by the sitter’s father (though no payments for any portrait of Carr appear in his ‘Book of Expences’ – only payments for pictures sent to the former Carr seat, Aswarby, on his behalf); thence by descent to Frederick William, 1st Marquess (1769-1859), by whom recorded in his handwritten list of c.1838, on the Staircase; inherited by the 4th Marquess (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; after which, accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
