Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Isabella Hervey, later Mrs Gervase Elwes (b.1659) as a Child by British (English) School or Flemish School, circa 1665. Inscribed: crudely, above: MRS ISABELLA: HERVEY and mid-right, in 18th century script: ISABELLA CARR HERVEY. A three-quarter-length portrait of a child, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white dress and coif; a single strand of pearls. She is standing by a table holding a brown worm in her right hand which she is about to feed to a grey popinjay on a green velvet covered table on the right.
Provenance
By family descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
